From February to June 2012, the Bavarian State Opera staged the "greatest challenge for any opera house" (Nikolaus Bachler) – Richard Wagner's world drama Der Ring des Nibelungen – within just five months.

The complete tetralogy will be shown in three cycles during the 2012/13 season. Director Andreas Kriegenburg is responsible for the new production, and General Music Director Kent Nagano will be conducting the Bavarian State Orchestra.
