Telecast of “Idomeneo” on 6/14/2008

After almost four years of renovation work, the Cuvilliés-Theater, the most significant rococo theatre building in Germany, will be reopened on June 14, 2008. The preview performance of the new production of Mozart’s Idomeneo will not only be the glorious high point of the reopening celebrations; this event will also return the opera to its “birthplace”: Mozart wrote his opera seria on commission from the Munich court. It was given its world première in the Cuvilliés-Theater on January 29, 1781.

Now it will celebrate a new première on June 18, 2008: staged by Dieter Dorn (with Jürgen Rose as designer) and under the musical direction of Kent Nagano.

The anticipation of the Munich audience finally to enjoy opera again in this rococo gem of a performance site was so overwhelming that the première and the following performances of Idomeneo were sold out in no time. This is why the Bavarian State Opera takes special pleasure in being able to present the first performance of “Idomeneo” on the occasion of the reopening to a larger audience. Bavarian Television will telecast the festive event with a slight time delay (starting at 8:15 P.M.). A documentary on Mozart, Munich and “Idomeneo” will be shown during the intermission. back
