"Maximiliansorden" Awarded to Sir Peter Jonas and Zubin Mehta

On April 17, Sir Peter Jonas and Zubin Mehta were awarded the Maximiliansorden (Order of Maximilian) by the Governor of Bavaria to honor them for their outstanding achievements in the artistic field. In his function as General Manager from 1993 to 2006, Sir Peter Jonas left a major imprint on the artistic profile of the Bavarian State Opera, and one of the most prominent international conductors presided over the Bavarian State Orchestra in the person of Zubin Mehta, who served as General Music Director from 1998 to 2006.

The high standard of artistic quality in their work was not only reflected in the significance of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich’s cultural life but also in the international renown of the house.

The Bavarian Maximiliansorden for Scholarship and Art is reserved to only 100 honorees, primarily German scholars and artists. The high state honor was initiated by Bavaria’s King Maximilian II in 1853. Following an interruption in 1932, the award was reinstated by then Governor Franz-Josef Strauss in 1981. The ceremony takes place every two years.
