For the second time, the Bavarian State Opera and the Pinakothek der Moderne will be jointly presenting a program for Festspiel+ in conjunction with the 2008 Munich Opera Festival, the artistic concept of which focuses on the relationship between the art forms New Music and the Visual Arts. The content of the program is drawn from a statement from Ferruccio Busoni, who had discovered a new æsthetic perspective in the interconnection between the acoustic and visual dimensions, from which the invisible is made visible on the stage: “The unseen is exposed by that which is heard.”
This idea will be followed in conjunction with Festspiel+ by one of the most incisive minds at IRCAM, the Institute for Music/Acoustic Research founded by Pierre Boulez in Paris: Jean-Baptiste Barrière. For the first time in Munich, he will present a program that not only introduces unconventional instrumental forms, but also the latest confrontations of great present-day composers with electronic music and audio-visual technology, which draw their life from the interaction of music and image.
In five visual concerts these compositions will encounter works by Thierry De Mey, Peter Greenaway, Anne Teresa de Keersmaker and William Forsythe, and the installation Counter Phrases will follow the self-same approach.
Likewise for Berlin artist Julian Göthe, Busoni’s Doktor Faust was the starting point for his encounters. He transposes the acoustic horizons of the work into his installation. His sculptures reference areas that are less recognized because of their application in the service of commerce - areas such as store window dressing, product design and motion picture art direction - and which avail themselves of the ability to reflect specific moods. The eccentric æsthetic of his works, like Busoni’s idiosyncratic interpretation and narrative style of the “Faust” theme, resists being pigeonholed into the generally acknowledged canon.
