Beginning of the news season 2003/2004
Dear Friends,
First of all, I’d like to thank you most sincerely for your cooperation during the season and the Munich Opera Festival.
With attendance figures at 97% of capacity, 86,000 tickets sold for 65 events, the 2003 Munich Opera Festival was a huge success despite the difficult economic situation. In comparison to last year, over 5,000 more people attended our Festival. Last season, for the first time, the Bavarian State Opera welcomed more than 600,000 people to its performances. Box office revenues were 10% above the already very optimistic estimates. Season Opener
This autumn we will be launching the new season with Georg Friedrich Händel’s Rodelinda, Regina de’ Longobardi, picking up on the success of the 2003 Festival, with the first performance on 9/17/2003 in the Nationaltheater. Dina Kuznetsova, who just put in a glowing performance as Musetta at the San Francisco Opera, will be making her State Opera début in the title role. Première
The first première in the 2003/2004 will be Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice in a production by Nigel Lowery. Nigel Lowery, known to Munich opera fans from his costumes and settings for Giulio Cesare in Egitto, will be making his début as a stage director with Orphée et Eurydice in Munich. Ivor Bolton will be the musical director, and the cast features Vesselina Kasarova, Rosemary Joshua and Deborah York. Concerts
The tradition-rich concert series of the Musical Academy will be taking a musical tour of Europe this season with the emphasis on Russian, Hungarian and French composers.
In October, Yoel Levi, who was born in Rumania and grew up in Israel, will be making his début with an exclusively Russian program. The young Chinese violin virtuoso Tianwa Yang will be making her first appearance in Germany during this concert. Young Finnish conductor Mikko Franck will be covering a wide range of music in the second Academy Concert, featuring works by Rautavaara, Bartók and Debussy. At the third Academy Concert, Neeme Järvi will be devoting the full evening to French music with compositions by Auber, Offenbach and Delibes, and many others.
Because of renovation work on the Cuvilliès-Theater, the chamber music concerts have found a new temporary home in the form of the Court Church of All Saints. Débuts
We can look forward to some important débuts at the start of the new season. Besides the first production anywhere directed by Nigel Lowery with Orphée et Eurydice, there will be débuts by Galina Gorchakova in the role of Lisa in Pique Dame, Dina Kusnetsova as Rodelinda, Georgina Lukács as Manon, Marlis Petersen as Queen of the Night, Christine Schäfer as Konstanze, Viktor Lutsiuk as Herman in Pique Dame, Michele Pertusi as Don Giovanni and Jukka Rasilainen as Mandryka in Arabella.
Beyond these, Mikko Franck, Neeme Järvi, Yoel Leve and Kirill Petrenko will be making their first appearances on the podium of the Bavarian State Opera. Opera for Children and Young People
The Bavarian State Opera’s program for children and young people offers the children and young people of all ages an opportunity to get acquainted with the world of opera and ballet. Apart from a personal discovery they be able to take a detailed, critical look at the works to be performed. With guided tours, introductory talks, attendance at performances and workshops, they will have a chance to witness an opera and ballet production as it comes into being. Pictures you can get at the photoarchive of our homepage http://www.staatsoper.de. I wish you a relaxing summer break and look forward to greeting you during the coming season. Kindest regards,
Julia Kessler SEPTEMBER
