Doktor Faust

An intellectual, driven by megalomania, the urge for recognition – and his own mid-life crisis – makes a pact with the devil. This subject has experienced countless recreations in art, literature and music most of them based on Goethe’s monumental “Faust” drama. Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni (1866 to 1924), however, took the old German puppet play version, the folk tale “Historia von D. Johann Fausten” as the source of his opera. The “Faust” story for once in a totally different guise: as a magic spell and mystery play.

Stage director: Nicolas Brieger

The Bassarids

What triumphs over us humans: libidinous intoxication or disciplined reason? Who wins over the people: Dionysos, god of collective inebriation and lord of the Bassarids or Pentheus, King of Thebes, a man of ice-cold rationality? Euripides exemplarily formulated these questions as the fundamental conflicts facing humanity 2,500 years ago in the “Bacchæ” – and it has remained totally up-to-date right to the present day.

High time to change that situation! That’s why Luisa Miller will finally come to Munich – see it! Hear it! Think!

Werther

The most famous suicide in world literature as a grand French opera: Werther loves Charlotte, she marries Albert. The passionate, torn Werther despairs and – shoots himself. Goethe’s novel Die Leiden des jungen Werther (The Sorrows of Young Werther) once set off a wave of suicides among young lovers. Jules Massenet’s opera has less of a suicidal effect on its audience – the work established itself as one of the most beautiful at the Grande Opéra. Great duet scenes between the lovesick tenor and his adored Charlotte: pure loveliness, sensuous musical intoxication. Opera that stirs the heart. Emotions that move the soul!
