Opera Up-to-Date. The Bavarian State Opera 2004/2005
Commemorating the Munich Opera Festival, each year a review of the past and concurrently a preview of the coming season. This books series stands out especially because of the essays on many aspects of opera.
What were the precepts of the Meistersingers and what are contemporary composers experimenting with today, what's the fascination of operatic divas in general and Edita Gruberova in particular, what did Hans Hotter sing in Munich, and how do they sing in the far north, what influences our hearing and sight, why is singing more than saying, and what does pop music teach us to fear?
These and other questions related to voices and singing are covered in the present edition of the Opera Up-to-Date yearbook series, the theme of which is taken from the 2004 Festival première opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The topics of the essays range between the indispensability of the singing human being as postulated by Wagner and its disappearance into the channels of techno tracks and pursue the objective of tracing singing as the most universal medium of music-making.
