Première Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness on December 23

Nacho Duato: Vielfältigkeit. Formen von Stille und Leere

Bach meets ballet. In its Christmas premiere the Bavarian State Ballet expresses in virtuoso dance the emotional essence of compositions by Bach. Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness is a ballet inspired by the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach and interprets Bach’s music through the idiom of contemporary dance.

The renowned Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato has translated the powerful baroque compositions of J.S. Bach, among them the Brandenburg Concertos, sonatas for violin or cello as well as concertos for organ, into a rich, naturally fluent movement language. Beside the central role of the composer genius the dancers personify all sorts of instruments, musical phrases and elements of composition. In 23 scenes the company covers the artistic process of creation of Johann Sebastian Bach and relates it to the decisive moments in his life.

The first part – Multiplicity – is a choreographic reflection that mirrors the diversity and wealth in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. Change of scenery and costumes, of fast and slow phrases of dance, is the central theme and arises from emotion and colour of the very different pieces chosen from Bach’s music.

The second part – Forms of Silence and Emptiness – is predominantly based on excerpts from “The Art of the Fugue”. This mystic and spiritual part reflects the imminence of death that for Nacho Duato seems inseparably connected with Bach’s music. The striking stage design, above all important for the first part, has been created by the architect Jaffar Chalabi and was awarded the “Benois de la Danse” in the year 2000.

The internationally renowned choreographer, showered with prizes, and director of the Compañia National de Danza created Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness for the art festival in Weimar in 1999, then cultural capital of Europe. Nacho Duato has up to now rarely conceded to produce his works on other companies. With Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness Nacho Duato for the first time entrusts an outstanding, evening-length work that has already been awarded the “Ballet-Oscar”, i.e. the “Benois de la Danse”, to a foreign company. The Bavarian State Ballet will give a new home to this Bach-Ballet in Munich.
