The world première of Helden opened the Ballet Festival Week 2013. Together with visual artist rosalie and a monumental music score provided by Lera Auerbach and Alfred Schnittke, Australian choreographer Kohler puts the myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus at the center of his work for the Bavarian State Ballet.
Kohler sets the scene for his heroes in present times, transporting the original conflict between two brothers into today's fast paced technology age in hope of finding a better future for humanity.
Myron Romanul conducts the Bavarian State Orchestra for this performance. Joining the ensemble for Helden in order to accommodate Lera Auerbach's elaborate orchestration are two additional instruments: the "singing saw" and the theremin.
The four main characters will be danced by Karen Azatyan (Prometheus), Wlademir Faccioni (Epimetheus), Séverine Ferrolier (Athena Parthenos) and Mai Kono (Pandora).

In 2012/13, the Bavarian State Opera will be the first international opera house to present, with STAATSOPER.TV, a season with online live-streams provided free of charge. Opera and ballet lovers from all over the world will be able to enjoy a total of seven opera performances and two ballet evenings full and live online from Munich. Helden will be the eighth live-stream of the season. The next performances to be streamed live during the Munich Opera Festival 2013 are Il trovatore and Boris Gudonov.

The award recognizes outstanding achievements in all genres of dance and personalities in the arts that help further the city’s growing reputation as a culture capital. The city council agreed with the proposal of an expert jury who nominated Mr. Siegal. They supported their decision with the following statement:

“Richard Siegal has a strong background and a strong presence. In Munich, he has long become more than an intellectual driving force. His work is ever present: his party-performance CoPirate opened the DANCE festival 2010. Only two years later he presented his moving, self-reflective solo Black Swan and As if Stranger (part of the series transACTION 2008). In 2012, he presented Civic Mimic at the New Egyptian Collection as part of the Rodeo Festival.”

Which ballet legacy will you experience during the 2012/2013 season? Follow our line of thought from tradition to modernity. And last but not least, which new commissions will be presented? Here, a little taster.

The mixed-bill program entitled Forever Young will premiere on November 17. The evening's program consists of works that may have been perceived as outrageous during their respective time. To this day, they remain a rare item in ballet repertoire around the world.  Léonide Massine's Choreartium, the first ballet choreographed to a symphonic score, is one of these works: outright scandalous in 1933, it has since become a distinct masterpiece without expiration date. Much similar to the second piece on the program: José Limón's The Moor's Pavane. The third and last part will be Broken Fall, a recent work by an ambassador of both London´s classical and modern dance scene, Russell Maliphant.

We celebrate the opening of the Ballet Festival Week 2013 with an original full-length ballet by Terence Kohler. Heroes - are they of the past? Do we still need them, and if so, what makes a real hero? Composer Lera Auerbach contributes the original score while both costume and set will be designed by rosalie. On April 23 and 24, the Mikhailovsky Ballet St. Petersburg will present Nacho Duato's Sleeping Beauty at the Nationaltheater. Finally, after a two year absence, we continue our Terpsichore Gala series with number XI.

The highly anticipated premiere of the late Merce Cunningham's 40-minute piece Biped, with a music score by Gavin Bryars, will take place on June 25. The program will also feature a young, but internationally experienced choreographer, Richard Siegal. For this world premiere, Siegal works in close collaboration with the renowned Munich designer, Konstantin Grcic.

On September 21, we welcome a beloved ballet fairy tale back into our active repertory: La Bayadère. We have been yearning for our very own Migratory Birds to return - they will "flock" back into the Nationaltheater on February 15. Remaining in our repertory are Steps & Times, Goldberg Varations / Gods & Dogs, Illusions – Like Swan Lake, La Fille mal gardée and The Nutcracker. Of course, the Bavarian State Ballet II will also offer an exciting program during the season!

To all dance addicts and to all those who want to become it, the Bavarian State Ballet offers a Dance Card from Season 2010/2011 on.

With the Dance Card - which is valid twelve months - you can purchase one ticket for every performance of the Bavarian State Ballet (except premieres, gala and guest performances) with a 20% price reduction. The Dance Card+ entitles you to buy even two reduced-price tickets. So why not invite friends and relatives to a ballet-evening at the Nationaltheater?

The Dance Card costs 46,- €, the Dance Card+ costs 79,- €; each additional 1,50 € for your personalized identification card. You are free to attend as many performances as you like and purchase your Dance Card and tickets in advance by post or in person from the box office. You’re also welcome to buy tickets at the evening box office. The Dance Card is non-transferable and must be shown along with a valid form of identification. Tickets bought using a Dance Card are free from administration fees.
