Ships of Fools
Lucia Ronchetti
Four Musical Processions for Soloists, Brass Band, Men’s Chorus and Passers-by
The opera goes onto the street and carries knowledge into the city! Back in the Middle Ages, when it moved out of the church, the spectacle dominated the urban public areas. In the twenties of the previous century, the agit prop theatre used the procession as a way to spread protest and gather spectators on the way to the actual performance venue. This
luogo deputato could be defined anywhere. Wherever the procession stopped, the playing field was opened and social realities dealt with. Inspired by the mediæval procession, Italian street bands, amateur theatricals, the agit-prop movement and contemporary street culture, Italian composer Lucia Ronchetti has set an in-transit music theatre in motion. Based on the moral satire
The Ship of Fools, with which Sebastian Brant held the mirror up to his time in the Basel of 1494, it confronts texts from 400 years of European intellectual history with its own musical material. The procession accompanies the passers-by to Pavillon 21, the
luogo deputato. Following each procession, a festival lecture is given by a well-known personality from the academic, cultural or political field.
