Fantasie lyrique in two parts
The child doesn’t want to do his homework, and so he truculently trashes his room. But suddenly all the things in it come to life and show the child what they think of his naughtiness. The furniture dances, the fire in the fireplace follows him around the room, the numbers from his arithmetic workbook whizz around, two cats take him out in the garden, where the animals conspire against to the child. Not until he takes pity on an injured squirrel do the other animals become more forgiving. At the end, the child is a good bit more grown-up.

In Maurice Ravel’s musical setting of Colette’s wicked little tale, jazz, operetta, bel canto and exotic music blend together to form a magical world of sound, inspired by the pulsating beat of Paris life with its movie houses, world’s fair and street culture. The Polish team headed by stage director Grzegorz Jarzyna has invented a production for it filled with varicolored enchantment and overflowing imagination.
