The guest performances of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch
represent one of the highlights of the ballet festival week 2010.
For over a decade Munich has not seen a work by this incomparable artist who died so unexpectedly in June 2009. However, her company continues to work and so these long-hoped-for guest performances in Munich will take place, though without their great artistic leader.
“Masurca Fogo”, created in Lisbon in 1998, represents a grand homage to life. Pina Bausch found inspiration for this work with her company in the Portuguese way of life and in encounters with various personalities of the Portuguese scene of art and culture.
The result was a richly colourful work of dance-theatre, celebrating the South, a declared belief in beauty, intimacy, closeness and tenderness. Not that this is always easy to realize, but yet that it is fundamentally possible, that you may dream, yeah must dream, in order to live a complete life – that is what “Masurca Fogo” asserts with softly enticing emphasis. The romantic dictum of August von Platen is valid here with an important modification: He who looks upon beauty with his eyes is not dedicated to death but to life. Thus dance-theatre quite incidentally solves an ancient misunderstanding of traditional German thinking and no longer sends beauty to Hades.
