Richard Strauss
Hugo von Hofmannsthal
A bourgeois dance on the volcano, a mountain of debt. Count Waldner and his wife have plenty of debts and two daughters, Arabella and Zdenka. Unfortunately they can only manage to scrape together sufficient funds to provide one of the girls, Arabella, with sufficient adornment for her to serve as the bride (and lure) for a well-to-do lord of the manor named Mandryka, in hopes he can rescue the bankrupt family. He's the "right one" – but first there are all sorts of (erotic) complications.
