Moses and Aron. Two brothers. Two different concepts of God. For Moses, He is abstract like the word. For Aron, He is visible like the image. Which of the two will the nation now believe? Whom will the chorus follow on its way to the Promised Land? First and foremost, however: whom will "we" follow? Hardly any other work of art says more to us image-dominated individuals, as we dance around one golden calf after another, than this gigantic fragment of 20th century musical theatre. In a staging by David Pountney, John Tomlinson (Moses), John Daszak (Aron), the Bavarian State Opera Chorus and Zubin Mehta on the podium debate the great questions of humanity, which, in the final analysis, also stumped Arnold Schönberg …
