Jiří Kylián

“I think, that our task as choreographers is to search the extremities of our souls,” says Jiří Kylián. Since the early 1970s, the celebrated Czech choreographer has created more than 100 works – most of them for the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). His creations are inspired by many different sources, combine diverse art forms and defy categorisation.

First smitten with the magic of circus, young Kylián started his studies as an acrobat. At the age of nine, he began to train at Prague National Theatre ballet school. Six years later, in 1962, he was accepted at Prague Conservatory and, in 1967, won a one-year-scholarship for London’s Royal Ballet School. There he met the influential choreographer John Cranko, who not only offered him a contract with Stuttgart Ballet but also encouraged him to embark in a career as a choreographer.

In 1975, Kylián left Germany to become artistic co-director at Nederlands Dans Theater, for which had created several pieces before. After the successful premiere of Sinfonietta (1978) at the “Festival of two worlds” in Charleston, South Carolina, he was given full responsibility for NDT’s artistic direction. Symphony of Psalms (also 1978) was the second significant creation of this time. This work had a decisive influence on the further development of the company and its international reputation. In the mid-1980s, Kylián’s work became more abstract as can be seen in the Black and White choreographies. This was due to an encounter with Australian Aboriginals that shaped his understanding of dance as an important “corner stone” of our social structure and an inevitable facet of our “artistic horizon”. Kylián marked NDT’s 35th anniversary by creating Arcimboldo (1994) for the three companies of NDT. The three-dimensional structure of the NDT is unique. Each company employs dancers of a different age, making the NDT one of the most diverse ensembles in the world. Unfortunately, in 2006, NDT III, which was for dancers older than 40, had to be closed due to financial shortages.

In 1999, Kylián resigned from his position as NDT’s artistic director but kept on working as resident choreographer until 2009.

In the course of his career, Kylián received many international honors, including “Officer of the Orange Order”, a doctorate at Juillard School New York, three Nijinsky Awards (Best Choreographer, Best Company, Best Work), the Prix Benoit de la Danse, the Honory Medal of the President of the Czech R Republic, and “Commander of the Legion d’honneur”. In 2008, he was distinguished with one of the highest royal honours, the Medal of the Order of the House of Orange, given to him by Her Majesty the Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands.

In 2009, Kylián created Zugvögel for Bavarian State Ballet. Three years later, in 2012, the ensemble will perform another work of the Czech choreographer: Gods and Dogs which premiered in November 2008 with NDT.

Jerome Robbins

Jerome Robbins is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as wells as for his work as choreographer and director in theater, movies and television.

He started his career in 1939 when joining the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre. Soon, he was casted for principal roles in the works of Fokine, Tudor, Massine, Lichine, and de Milles. In 1944, Robbins created his first ballet, Fancy Free, which premiered with ABT. More than 60 ballets followed, for example Afternoon of a Faun (1953), The Concert (1956), Les Noces (1965), Dances at a Gathering (1969), In the Night (1970), The Goldberg Variations (1971), In G Major (1975), Other Dances (1976), Glass Pieces (1983) und Ives Songs (1989) which are in the repertoires of major dance companies throughout the world. He has worked closely with New York City Ballet. In 1949, he was given the position of Associate Artistic Director and, several years later, the position of Ballet-Master-in-Chief which he shared with Frank Martin.

Simultaneously, Robbins worked as a choreographer and director for numerous Broadway musicals and plays. Among them are On the Town (1945), Billion Dollar Baby (1946), High Button Shoes (1947), Miss Liberty (1949), Call me Madame (1950), The King and I (1951), Peter Pan (1954), West Side Story (1957), for which he received two Academy Awards, Gypsy (1959) and Fiddler on the Roof (1964). His last musical Jerome Robbins’ Broadway of 1989 won him six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director.

Other awards and citations include five Donaldson Awards, an Emmy Award, the Screen Directors‘  Guild Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. He is a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient and was awarded the French Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur.

Jerome Robbins passed away in 1998 at the age of 80 years.

First Soloist

Ekaterina Petina was born in Sevastopol. Ten years old she started training at the Waganova Academy in St. Petersburg. In 2001 she assumed her first engagement at the Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg where she among others danced solo parts in Balanchine’s Rubies, Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, Approximate Sonata, Steptext and several fairies in Sleeping Beauty. She also participated in various Mariinsky Theatre tours across Japan, England, China, Canada and Mexico.

In 2009/2010 she became a Soloist and since the beginning of the season 2011/12 she performs as First Solist at the Bavarian State Ballet.

Giuliana Bottino

Giuliana Bottino was born in Catania/Italy and started to dance at the age of six. She was trained at the Elmhurst School for Dance in Association with the Royal Ballet. In the season 2007/2008 she was engaged at the Cannes Jeune Ballet in France.

She joined the Corps de ballet of the Bavarian State Ballet in season 2008/2009.

Lukáš Slavický

Principal dancer

Lukáš Slavický was born in Prague and received his training at the conservatory where his father Jaroslav Slavický is director of the dance department. Since both his parents were ballet dancers dance was in his blood from boyhood and he very soon attracted attention. While still a student he danced solo parts in Nutcracker and La Fille mal gardée. When the school guested at the theatre in Brno he danced the Don Quixote pas de deux. For this and many other performances he chose Zuzana Zahradníková as his partner and together they came to Munich in 1999, Zuzana as apprentice and Lukáš as corps de ballet dancer.

In 1997 Lukáš Slavický won the first prize at the ballet competition in Vienna, was in the finals of the Prix de Lausanne in 1998 and was awarded the third prize at the Nureyev competition in Budapest the same year, and again, one year later, in Nagoya, Japan. Even before his first professional engagement he was invited to dance at galas, e.g. in 1997 and 1998 in Ludwigsburg for the Birgit-Keil-Foundation, and again at the gala on the occasion of the award of the German Tanzpreis to Birgit Keil. In 1999 he appeared at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow with the Jeune Ballet de France and at the Nureyev memorial gala in Budapest.

Since the season 1999/2000 Lukáš Slavický has been a member of the Bavarian State Ballet. Even in his first year in the corps de ballet he was given small solo parts, e.g. in the pas de six in Giselle and as Bird-Spirit in A Cinderella Story by Neumeier. At the beginning of the 2000/2001 season he made his debut as Romeo in John Cranko’s ballet Romeo and Juliet and as Prince in Neumeier’s A Cinderella Story, in both cases as partner of Anna Villadolid. The same season Lucinda Childs created one of the leads in her Händel/Corelli for him. In December 2001 he danced Jean de Brienne in Raymonda for the first time and danced in Balanchine’s Brahms-Schönberg Quartett as well a created role in Jacopo Godani’s After Dark. With the beginning of the 2002/2003 season he was appointed first soloist and in 2003/2004 he was appointed principal.

In May 2003, he received the Prix Benois in the category “best male dancer”.

Nikita Korotkov

Nikita Korotkov was born in Ekaterinburg / Russia and attended the State Conservatorium of Prague. He completed his dance training at the Dance Academy in Zurich, where he received his diploma in 2008.

He joined the Corps de ballet of the Bavarian State Ballet in the season 2008/09. He dances a solo part in Cambio d'abito by Simone Sandroni.

Evgenia Dolmatova was born in Lida, Belarus. She trained at the Vaganova Ballet Academy. In 2005 she joined the Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg where she performed in nearly every classical ballet like La Sylphide, Giselle, La Bayadère, Raymonda, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Anna Karenina, Shéhérazade, The Fire Bird, Swan Lake, Symphony in C, La Valse, Cinderella, Don Quixote, amongst others. Furthermore she took part in tours all over Europe, the USA and Japan.

Evgenia Dolmatova joined the Bavarian State Ballet at the Soloist rank in August 2012.

Séverine Ferrolier
First Soloist
Séverine Ferrolier, born in Toulon/France, was trained in the Centre de Danse Christiane Espitalier de La Valette. Having graduated, she danced with the ballet at the Opéra de Toulon, the Ballet National de Nancy under the direction of Pierre Lacotte and with the English National Ballet in London. Between 1997 and 2004 she was engaged at Leipzig Ballet under the direction of Uwe Scholz, since 2002 as a first soloist. Scholz created several parts for her, e.g. in Bruckner 8, Non, je ne regrette rien and h-Moll- Messe. She also danced Mathilde in Scholz' Le Rouge et le Noir.

In 2004 she became a member of the Bavarian State Ballet, giving her debut with the company in George Balanchine's Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet during the company's guest performances in Athens in June. Her Munich repertoire includes the Lilac Fairy in Sleeping Beauty (M. Petipa/I. Liška), Olympia in Neumeier's Lady of the Camellias and prominent solo parts in Forsythe's Limb's Theorem.

Maxim Chashchegorov

First Soloist

Maxim Chashchegorov, born in Russia,  received his dance education at the Ballet Academy in St Petersburg. Directly after his graduation he became a member of the corps de ballet from the Marijinsky Theatre and started soon to impersonate bigger roles as the prince Siegfried / Rotbart in Swanlake, Blue bird in Sleeping Beauty, and was for example to see in more modern roles like Four Temperaments (G. Balanchine) and different choreographies of William Forsythe.

After his guest-performance as Blue Bird in spring 2007, he now is engaged as a soloist of the Bavarian State Ballet from the season 2007/2008 on. Since 2009/2010 he is a first Soloist.

Dustin Klein

Corps de ballet

Dustin Klein was born in Landsberg am Lech/Germany, where he started his ballet training. Then he joined the classes of Professor Heinz Manniegel in Munich and the Jaga Antony Ballet School in Luxemburg. He completed his dance training at the Royal Ballet School in London and joined the Ballett der Deutschen Oper am Rhein for the seasons 2006 to 2008.

She joined the Corps de ballet of the Bavarian State Ballet in 2008.

Lucia Lacarra
Principal dancer 

Lucia Lacarra, born in San Sebastián, knew from earliest childhood that she was born to be a ballerina. Whenever she saw pictures of the ballet school in Monte Carlo, sponsored by Grace Kelly, she cried because she still had no chance to dance. It was only when in her small Basque hometown a studio was opened that she was able to begin with lessons. She was ten at that time. Soon she was sent to a summer course directed by Rosella Hightower. There Lucia´s mother was strongly advised to support her daughter's obvious talent. So she was sent to San Sebastián to Mentxu Medel who worked with Lucia for three years in a completely unselfish way to prepare her for the audition to Victor Ullate´s school in Madrid. Already in her second year there she was given a contract to the Ballet de Victor Ullate. She was just fifteen when she danced Balanchine´s Allegro Brillante. In the course of four seasons this was followed by Concerto Barocco, Fokine´s Les Sylphides, four works by Hans van Manen, Nils Christe´s Before Nightfall, as well as four pieces by her mentor Ullate who gave her the necessary self-confidence.

In 1994 she joined Roland Petit´s Ballets de Marseille as principal. Petit immediately entrusted her with the role of Esmeralda, with Patrick Dupont as her partner, in Notre Dame de Paris, replacing Dominique Khalfouni. From Roland Petit she learned above all to always be emotionally present on stage and she felt that in this company everything was danced in a somewhat more classical style. Within three years she danced the leading roles in seven ballets by Roland Petit, four of which were created on her, most notably Angélique in Le Guépard and, as partner of Nicolas Le Riche, in the famous Le Jeune homme et la Mort. In her pursuit of classicism she then decided to join the San Francisco Ballet. Under the direction of Helgi Tomasson she could dance Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty for the first time, i.e. some of the classical roles that a young ballerina has to master. The Cage, In the Night and Dances at a Gathering by Jerome Robbins became part of her repertoire, as well as six Balanchine ballets, from Serenade to Jewels, and Victor Gsovsky´s Grand Pas Classique, three ballets by Helgi Tomasson, MacMillian´s The Invitation, van Manen´s Black Cake, Nacho Duato´s Without Words, Roland Petit´s L'Arlésienne and Desdemona in Lar Lubovitch´s contemporary Othello.

Lucia Lacarra has joined the Bayerisches Staatsballett with the 2002/2003 season in order to return towards the leading European choreographers. In the course of the first three months in Munich she danced Raymonda, Tatjana and Odette/Odile as well as the third pas de deux of In the Night, always together with her partner of many years, Cyril Pierre who has also joined the company as principal. Together they are guests in the big theatres around the world. She also danced in Portrait John Neumeier in Jupiter Symphony and In the Blue Garden. In the autumn 2003 she danced Louise in John Neumeier's The Nutcracker as well as Titania/Hippolyta in his A Midsummer Night's Dream and the title role in Ivan Liška's new production of The Sleeping Beauty.

Lucia Lacarra was awarded with the Prix Nijinsky in Monte Carlo in December 2002, followed by the Prix Benois which she won in Moskau in April 2003. She was nominated in 2004 and 2005 for the Merkur Theaterpreis in Munich. In November 2005 she was awarded with the Spanish Premio Nacional de Danza 2005. This prize, endowed with 30.000,- Euro is one of the highest awards the Spanish government gives out. In 2007 she was announced honorary citizen and cultural messenger of her home town San Sebastián. In 2008, she was awarded the honorary title "Kammertänzerin" by the Bavarian Ministry of Culture.

Mai Kono, born in Japan, started her dance education at the Hitomi Kikuchi Ballet Studio, and completed it at the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung in Munich. Tigran Mikayelyan
Principal dancer

Tigran Mikayelyan was born in Yerevan/ Armenia and trained at the Armenian Ballet school Erewan from 1989-1997. In 1997 he got a scholarship from the Nurejev - Foundation and joined the Suisse Ballet Academy SBBS in Zurich. He won several international prizes including the 1st prize in the Armenian Ballet Competition "Amadeus" as well as the Prix Niveau Professional of the Prix de Lausanne. Having graduated in 1998 he was engaged with the Zurich Ballet where he was promoted to soloist in 1999 and to first soloist in 2003. During his time at the Zurich Ballet he danced a broad repertoire of Heinz Spoerli's choreographies as well as the part of Dorkon in Daphnis und Chloé, the Solo-Boy in Rubies, in Hans van Manen's Solo and Große Fuge as well as Allegro Brillante by George Balanchine.

In 2005/2006 he joined the Bavarian State Ballet as a first Soloist and was promoted to Principal at the beginning of the season 2007/2008.
In 2007, his home country announced Tigran Mikayelyan as "Honoured Artist of Armenia", the highest appreciation artists of his country can achieve.
In summer 2007 he received the theatre award of the Münchner Merkur.

Karen Azatyan
First Soloist

Karen Azatyan, born in Armenia, started his dance education at the Yerevan Dancing Art State College and completed it in 2007 at the Dance Academy in Zurich. During his time in Zurich he received the second price at the competition “Tanz Olymp Berlin 2005” in the category classic variation and in the same year the Prix de Lausanne scholarship and won the young promising dancer award of the international ballet competition Varna in 2006.

From the season 2007/2008 on, he has joined the Bavarian State Ballet as a member of the Corps de ballet and becam a soloist in autumn 2010. With the beginning of the season 2012/13 Karen Azatyan became First Soloist.

Léonard Engel
Soloist

Léonard Engel was born in Mulhouse / France and was trained at the Paris Opera Ballet School. In his last year at the Ballet Academy he danced in Cinderella at the Paris Opera Ballet. Then he got engaged for three seasons at the Victor Ullate Ballet Madrid.

He was engaged from the Bavarian State Ballet in the season 2008/2009 as a member of the Corps de ballet and promoted to Soloist in July 2012.

Ilia Sarkisov
Soloist

Ilia Sarkisov was born in Moscow and trained in Israel. At the age of 16 he came to Munich to study at the Ballet Academy/Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung.

He joined the Bavarian State Ballet in season 2004-05 as an apprentice. He received the Bavarian State Award for promising talents in the Performing Arts in autumn 2004.
