Jiří Kylián

“I think, that our task as choreographers is to search the extremities of our souls,” says Jiří Kylián. Since the early 1970s, the celebrated Czech choreographer has created more than 100 works – most of them for the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT). His creations are inspired by many different sources, combine diverse art forms and defy categorisation.

First smitten with the magic of circus, young Kylián started his studies as an acrobat. At the age of nine, he began to train at Prague National Theatre ballet school. Six years later, in 1962, he was accepted at Prague Conservatory and, in 1967, won a one-year-scholarship for London’s Royal Ballet School. There he met the influential choreographer John Cranko, who not only offered him a contract with Stuttgart Ballet but also encouraged him to embark in a career as a choreographer.

In 1975, Kylián left Germany to become artistic co-director at Nederlands Dans Theater, for which had created several pieces before. After the successful premiere of Sinfonietta (1978) at the “Festival of two worlds” in Charleston, South Carolina, he was given full responsibility for NDT’s artistic direction. Symphony of Psalms (also 1978) was the second significant creation of this time. This work had a decisive influence on the further development of the company and its international reputation. In the mid-1980s, Kylián’s work became more abstract as can be seen in the Black and White choreographies. This was due to an encounter with Australian Aboriginals that shaped his understanding of dance as an important “corner stone” of our social structure and an inevitable facet of our “artistic horizon”. Kylián marked NDT’s 35th anniversary by creating Arcimboldo (1994) for the three companies of NDT. The three-dimensional structure of the NDT is unique. Each company employs dancers of a different age, making the NDT one of the most diverse ensembles in the world. Unfortunately, in 2006, NDT III, which was for dancers older than 40, had to be closed due to financial shortages.

In 1999, Kylián resigned from his position as NDT’s artistic director but kept on working as resident choreographer until 2009.

In the course of his career, Kylián received many international honors, including “Officer of the Orange Order”, a doctorate at Juillard School New York, three Nijinsky Awards (Best Choreographer, Best Company, Best Work), the Prix Benoit de la Danse, the Honory Medal of the President of the Czech R Republic, and “Commander of the Legion d’honneur”. In 2008, he was distinguished with one of the highest royal honours, the Medal of the Order of the House of Orange, given to him by Her Majesty the Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands.

In 2009, Kylián created Zugvögel for Bavarian State Ballet. Three years later, in 2012, the ensemble will perform another work of the Czech choreographer: Gods and Dogs which premiered in November 2008 with NDT.

Jerome Robbins

Jerome Robbins is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as wells as for his work as choreographer and director in theater, movies and television.

He started his career in 1939 when joining the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre. Soon, he was casted for principal roles in the works of Fokine, Tudor, Massine, Lichine, and de Milles. In 1944, Robbins created his first ballet, Fancy Free, which premiered with ABT. More than 60 ballets followed, for example Afternoon of a Faun (1953), The Concert (1956), Les Noces (1965), Dances at a Gathering (1969), In the Night (1970), The Goldberg Variations (1971), In G Major (1975), Other Dances (1976), Glass Pieces (1983) und Ives Songs (1989) which are in the repertoires of major dance companies throughout the world. He has worked closely with New York City Ballet. In 1949, he was given the position of Associate Artistic Director and, several years later, the position of Ballet-Master-in-Chief which he shared with Frank Martin.

Simultaneously, Robbins worked as a choreographer and director for numerous Broadway musicals and plays. Among them are On the Town (1945), Billion Dollar Baby (1946), High Button Shoes (1947), Miss Liberty (1949), Call me Madame (1950), The King and I (1951), Peter Pan (1954), West Side Story (1957), for which he received two Academy Awards, Gypsy (1959) and Fiddler on the Roof (1964). His last musical Jerome Robbins’ Broadway of 1989 won him six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director.

Other awards and citations include five Donaldson Awards, an Emmy Award, the Screen Directors‘  Guild Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. He is a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient and was awarded the French Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur.

Jerome Robbins passed away in 1998 at the age of 80 years.

First Soloist

Ekaterina Petina was born in Sevastopol. Ten years old she started training at the Waganova Academy in St. Petersburg. In 2001 she assumed her first engagement at the Mariinsky Theatre St. Petersburg where she among others danced solo parts in Balanchine’s Rubies, Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, Approximate Sonata, Steptext and several fairies in Sleeping Beauty. She also participated in various Mariinsky Theatre tours across Japan, England, China, Canada and Mexico.

In 2009/2010 she became a Soloist and since the beginning of the season 2011/12 she performs as First Solist at the Bavarian State Ballet.

Emma Barrowman.
Soloist

Emma Barrowman was born in Sherbrook/Canada. She received her dance education at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and gained important experience at the Cannes Jeune Ballet under the direction of Monique Loudières. At the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company she danced in Swan Lake, Nutcracker and The Magic Flute by Mark Godden.

Emma Barrowman became an Apprentice of the Bavarian State Ballet in autumn 2006. One year later she became a member of the corps de ballet and was engaged as a soloist in the season 2010/2011.

Cyril Pierre

Principal dancer

Cyril Pierre was born in Nancy, France, and trained at the Conservatoire of his native town, before joining Serge Golovine's class at the Ballet School of the Opéra National de Paris.
Having graduated, he was engaged at Roland Petit's Ballet National de Marseille, where he was promoted to first solist in 1990 and to étoile (Principal) in 1992. Four years later, Helgi Tomasson invited him to join the San Francisco Ballet as a Principal Dancer. His San Francisco repertory included all major classical roles, as well as contemporary creations by Helgi Tomasson, James Kudelka and others.

Together with his partner Lucia Lacarra he joined the Bavarian State Ballet as a Principal Dancer in autumn 2002, dancing such important roles as Onegin, Prince Siegfried (Swanlake) and Abderakhman (Raymonda) in his very first Munich season.

During season 2003-04, he enlarged his repertoire with Günther in John Neumeier's Nutcracker, Oberon/Theseus in Neumeier's Midsummer Night's Dream and Prince Désiré in The Sleeping Beauty (Marius Petipa/Ivan Liška).

As a guest dancer, Cyril appears on stages world wide, in full performances (Berlin, Prague, Naples, Milan), as well as in galas, mostly together with his partner Lucia Lacarra.

Wlademir Faccioni
First Soloist

Wlademir Faccioni was born in Brazil and was trained in the Munich Ballett-Akademie/Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung. In 2002 he joined the Bavarian State Ballet as an apprentice and became a member of the corps de ballet in January 2003.

His repertoire includes Jiří Kylián's Six Dances and Svadebka, Hans van Manen’s Solo and a prominent part in Itzik Galilis So nah so fern.

His first choreography Vivace (on music by Vivaldi) was created in 2004 as part of the State Ballet’s Young Choreographers Programme.

He was promoted to a Soloist at the beginning of the season 2007/2008 and dances as a First Soloist since the beginning of the season 2011/12.

Roberta Fernandes.
Principal dancer

Roberta Fernandes is from Brazil. Her most important teachers there were Eugênia Feodorova, Rosália Verlangieri and Emilio Martins. From 1991 until 1993 she attended the John-Cranko-School in Stuttgart and received her first engagement with the Stuttgart Ballet under the direction of Marcia Haydée. She was appointed soloist in 1998. Her repertoire includes Opus I by John Cranko, Voluntaries by Glen Tetley, the Pas de Deux of Holbergs Zeiten (John Cranko), Myrtha in Giselle (Reid Anderson and Valentina Savina), Aurora and Elderfairy in Sleeping Beauty (Marcia Haydée) and Kitri in Don Quijote (Maximiliano Guerra). She danced in Brouillards and Initialien R.B.M.E. (John Cranko), Monotones (Frederick Ashton), Herman Schmerman, Aproximate Sonata, Love Songs and Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude (William Forsythe), Siebte Sinfonie (Uwe Scholz), Manon and Prudence in Lady of the Camellias by John Neumeier and the leading role in Theme and Variations (George Balanchine). Further parts were: Paquita (Marius Petipa), Song of the Earth (Sir Kenneth MacMillan), Große Fuge (Hans van Manen) and Dances at Gathering (Jerome Robbins). 2002 she gave her debut as Odette/Odile in Swanlake and she danced the part of Katharina in John Cranko’s The Taming of the Shrew in 2004. Shortly after that she performed the part of the queen in Jerome Robbin’s The Cage.

She created roles in ballets by Nacho Duato (The flower), Heinz Spoerli (How it happens), John Alleyne (Aria for my father), Stefan Thoss (Les Noces), Kevin O’Day (Delta Inserts, dreamdeepdown), Pascal Touzeau (Jupiter), Trey McIntyre (The Difference between Naked and Nude), Dominique Dumais (Still,nest), Mauro Bigonzetti (Quattro Danze per Nino, Kazimir’s Colours) as well as Christian Spuck, Jean Cristophe Blavier, Marguerite Donlon and Jean Christophe Maillot.

In 2005/2006 she joined the Bavarian State Ballet as a Soloist and was promoted to Principal at the beginnning of the season 2007/2008.
In Munich Roberta Fernandes could extend her large classic and particularly contemporary repertoire, for example Gamzatti and first solo in the Schattenakt in La Bayadère (P. Bart), the creation of

Stephanie Hancox
Soloist

Stephanie Hancox was born in Australia and started her training at the Tanya Pearson Classical Coaching Academy in Sydney. In January 2001, Stephanie came to Munich to complete her training at Ballett-Akademie/Heinz-Bosl-Foundation. Among others she danced the Corsaire-Pas de deux, in Paquita, in Light Fandango (Robert North) as well as a solo in In the Future (Hans van Manen).

In September 2003 she became member of the Bavarian State Ballet. In season 2004/2005 she danced in Forsythe’s Limb´s Theorem and Hans van Manen’s Black Cake.
She was promoted to soloist in the season 2008/2009.

Matej Urban
First Soloist

Matej Urban was born in Prague and trained at the National Conservatorium Prague. Then he danced at the National Theatre of Prague for two seasons.

He became a member of the Corps de ballet of the Bavarian State Ballet in the season 2008/2009, became Soloist in the season 2010/2011 and dances as First Solist since the beginning of the season 2011/12.

Katherina Markowskaja
First Soloist

Katherina Markowskaja was born in Kiev, Ukraine where she completed her training at the National Ballet Academy of Arts. As a student, she was cast in performances of the National Ballet of Kiev. At the age of sixteen, she accepted a scholarship of the Heinz-Bosl-Foundation, offered to her by Konstanze Vernon. Ms. Markowskaja graduated from the Ballet-Academy Munich and subsequently joined the Saxon State Opera Ballet Dresden under artistic director Vladimir Derevianko. She was promoted to the rank of first soloist two years later. In 1999, she received the Mary Wigman Award.

Her repertory includes, among others, classical principal roles such as Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Giselle, Kitri (Don Quijote), Lise (La Fille mal gardée), Bianca (The Taming of the Shrew – Cranko) and Otilie (Wahlverwandtschaften – Schilling) as well as in John Neumeier's ballets Natalia and Princess Claire (Illusions – like Swan Lake), Marie (Nutcracker), Hermia (A Midsummer Night's Dream), Rosalind (As you like it) and Chloé (Daphnis and Chloé).

Since 2010, she works as a freelance ballerina and trains with the Bavarian State Ballet. Since the beginning of the season 2012/13 she is a First Soloist.

Mai Kono
Soloist

Mai Kono, born in Japan, started her dance education at the Hitomi Kikuchi Ballet Studio, and completed it at the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung in Munich. During her young career she already won different kind of dance awards, such as the NBA Ballet Competition of Japan 2004, the Saitama Dance Competition of Japan 2005 and in 2007 she received the audience award at the Prix de Lausanne.

She was promoted to a Soloist at the beginning of the season 2011/12.

Lukáš Slavický

Principal dancer

Lukáš Slavický was born in Prague and received his training at the conservatory where his father Jaroslav Slavický is director of the dance department. Since both his parents were ballet dancers dance was in his blood from boyhood and he very soon attracted attention. While still a student he danced solo parts in Nutcracker and La Fille mal gardée. When the school guested at the theatre in Brno he danced the Don Quixote pas de deux. For this and many other performances he chose Zuzana Zahradníková as his partner and together they came to Munich in 1999, Zuzana as apprentice and Lukáš as corps de ballet dancer.

In 1997 Lukáš Slavický won the first prize at the ballet competition in Vienna, was in the finals of the Prix de Lausanne in 1998 and was awarded the third prize at the Nureyev competition in Budapest the same year, and again, one year later, in Nagoya, Japan. Even before his first professional engagement he was invited to dance at galas, e.g. in 1997 and 1998 in Ludwigsburg for the Birgit-Keil-Foundation, and again at the gala on the occasion of the award of the German Tanzpreis to Birgit Keil. In 1999 he appeared at the Kremlin Palace in Moscow with the Jeune Ballet de France and at the Nureyev memorial gala in Budapest.

Since the season 1999/2000 Lukáš Slavický has been a member of the Bavarian State Ballet. Even in his first year in the corps de ballet he was given small solo parts, e.g. in the pas de six in Giselle and as Bird-Spirit in A Cinderella Story by Neumeier. At the beginning of the 2000/2001 season he made his debut as Romeo in John Cranko’s ballet Romeo and Juliet and as Prince in Neumeier’s A Cinderella Story, in both cases as partner of Anna Villadolid. The same season Lucinda Childs created one of the leads in her Händel/Corelli for him. In December 2001 he danced Jean de Brienne in Raymonda for the first time and danced in Balanchine’s Brahms-Schönberg Quartett as well a created role in Jacopo Godani’s After Dark. With the beginning of the 2002/2003 season he was appointed first soloist and in 2003/2004 he was appointed principal.

In May 2003, he received the Prix Benois in the category “best male dancer”.

In 2002/2003 he danced Basilio in Don Quijote (Ray Barra), Lenski in Onegin (John Cranko), After Dark (Jacopo Godani), Lysander in Ein Sommernachtstraum (John Neumeier) und Solo in Jupiter-Sinfonie (John Neumeier).

Karen Azatyan
First Soloist

Karen Azatyan, born in Armenia, started his dance education at the Yerevan Dancing Art State College and completed it in 2007 at the Dance Academy in Zurich. During his time in Zurich he received the second price at the competition “Tanz Olymp Berlin 2005” in the category classic variation and in the same year the Prix de Lausanne scholarship and won the young promising dancer award of the international ballet competition Varna in 2006.

From the season 2007/2008 on, he has joined the Bavarian State Ballet as a member of the Corps de ballet and becam a soloist in autumn 2010. With the beginning of the season 2012/13 Karen Azatyan became First Soloist.

Gözde Özgür was born in Ankara/Turkey and was trained at the State Conservatorium Ankara. At the age of 15 she joined the Ballet Academy Zürich, where she received her diploma in 2008.

She joined the Corps de ballet of the Bavarian State Ballet in the season 2008/2009.
She danced a solo variation in Jiří Kylián's creation Zugvögel.
She was promoted to a Soloist since the beginning of the season 2011/12.

Léonard Engel
Soloist

Léonard Engel was born in Mulhouse / France and was trained at the Paris Opera Ballet School. In his last year at the Ballet Academy he danced in Cinderella at the Paris Opera Ballet. Then he got engaged for three seasons at the Victor Ullate Ballet Madrid.

He was engaged from the Bavarian State Ballet in the season 2008/2009 as a member of the Corps de ballet and promoted to Soloist in July 2012.

Wlademir Faccioni
First Soloist

Wlademir Faccioni was born in Brazil and was trained in the Munich Ballett-Akademie/Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung. In 2002 he joined the Bavarian State Ballet as an apprentice and became a member of the corps de ballet in January 2003.

His repertoire includes Jiří Kylián's Six Dances and Svadebka, Hans van Manen’s Solo and a prominent part in Itzik Galilis So nah so fern.

His first choreography Vivace (on music by Vivaldi) was created in 2004 as part of the State Ballet’s Young Choreographers Programme.

He was promoted to a Soloist at the beginning of the season 2007/2008 and dances as a First Soloist since the beginning of the season 2011/12.

Ilia Sarkisov
Soloist

Ilia Sarkisov was born in Moscow and trained in Israel. At the age of 16 he came to Munich to study at the Ballet Academy/Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung.

He joined the Bavarian State Ballet in season 2004-05 as an apprentice. He received the Bavarian State Award for promising talents in the Performing Arts in autumn 2004. He joined the Corps de ballet of the Bavarian State Ballet in the season 2005/2006 and was promoted to s Soloist at the beginning of the season 2011/12.
